This has actually been a good thing for Canada. The Canadian hospitality sector has been delighted to offer its services to the people of the globe who would like to come to North America but have no interest in spending money in the US.
Of course, it is a two way street. Lots of Canadians who would have been traveling to the US now choose to spend their loonies in Europe or Mexico.
Paul Krugman made this observation about Trump's speech last night. It was of course horrifying to see him setting out the first step in his plan to interfere in the election.
But anyone listening from the beginning heard this outrageous introduction:
Donald Trump surprised me last night. I expected to hear lurid lies about the 2020 election. What he offered instead was mostly dreary innuendo that convinced nobody.Which is not to say that his speech was free of lies. Indeed, more or less every word he spoke was a lie, including “a,” “and,” and “the.” But the most spectacular lies weren’t about U.S. elections. They were at the beginning, when Trump boasted about America’s place in the world. Here’s the part that caught my eye:
"We had transgender for everybody, men in women’s sports, crime ravaging our cities, and the whole world was laughing at us as a nation, but not anymore. Two years ago, our country was dead. Now, we are the hottest country anywhere in the world. America is respected like we have never been respected before."
In reality, one of the most spectacular consequences of Trump’s return to power and the mess he has made since has been a collapse of global respect for America. The chart at the top of this post is from Pew’s Global Attitudes Survey, but you don’t need a formal survey to know that the world increasingly despises the U.S. Just travel overseas and talk to people.
Your quote from Krugman proves me right — humor is not a liberal thing!
From our foreign correspondent, Joanne, seriously?
“Does he pay for his food? Or does he shoplift, and dine and dash? Does he pay his taxes? Why??
“If he insists on playing tennis outside on a day with really poor air quality, and becomes unwell (perhaps with a longterm illness), will he blame the BOM for not warning him of the consequences of such an act?? (For that matter, what about trying to play golf during a tornado, or hiking during a fierce tornado??)
“Sigh.”
POTUS is only 80, so at 94, I am in no competition to outdo his energy and drive . But over just the past two weeks he has been in multiple worldwide venues in multiple time zones, fielding complex questions from correspondents from around the globe — many hoping to be the source which trips up Trump!
Trump is the cruelest, most ignorant, most corrupt and most anti-Constitutional President in our history. He is doing real damage to democracy in the United States. Objections to Trump expressed on MOL start and end with the basic fact.
that overused term “people of color” is getting tired as the range of “colors” around the globe grows exponentially almost daily! The Civil War is over!
If one is concerned about the burden of “lower income arrivals,” it might be wise to set limits on the number of immigrants from around the globe demanding their “right” to enter the USofA and partake of its largesse. Seems a good number of these folks paid large sums of money to traffickers for helping them break and disrespect our laws from Day One!
I would be more concerned about Dems voting Socialists, splitting up the Party. rather than building a stronger united one. Who, or what will the DNC become?
The racism in your post is loud enough it barely needs comment, but don't overlook the false implication that you respect our laws. The scale and breadth of this administrations lawlessness is gobsmacking, but even if we focus just on your pet topic -- immigration -- we see a lawless presidency:
